Villa Grimaldi

Villa Grimaldi
A palatial estate at the foot of the Andes mountains that served as the main torture and detention center for the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA, Directorate of National Intelligence), the Chilean secret police. More than 200 political prisoners were detained there from 1974 until 1977, when DINA was officially dissolved. After the return to civilian rule, Villa Grimaldi was razed, and human-rights groups converted the space into a “Park of Memory” in honor of the thousands who disappeared during the military regime of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte.
